How To Make Picture Frames
It takes skill and proper equipment to make a picture frame. That’s why many people opt to buy commercial frames rather than making them. Not a lot of people realize that they can make beautiful photo frames with just some common carpentry tools which can be found in most homes. In fact, making picture frames is an enjoyable and fun woodworking activity.
In making picture frames, one must consider the size of the drawing or certificate that will be framed. If using double matting then the frame must be larger than the image. Also, it must be noted that the size of the side pieces must be wider for larger frames. After choosing the type of solid wood to be used for the picture frame, the wood is cut into pieces with measurements corresponding to the size of the wooden frame. There must be an allowance on each side.
After cutting the frame’s pieces, the profile bits must be chosen as there are various styles available to suit everyone’s tastes. The face molding bit can be used to rout each piece of wood to make the face profile while for the rabbet profile, the back of the frame where the glass will sit must be routed also. Then each piece must be ripped to the required width measurement. On the outside of each of the frame pieces, a cove edge must be made in order to complete the frame profile. After which the frame can be cut in 45 degree angles using a miter saw which is laser guided and equipped with the necessary support. The miter cuts must be tested first using scrap pieces of wood until a good fitting joint is acquired.
When the desired length of one frame’s piece is achieved, the stop block can be used to measure the second piece. When the frame has been cut, the joints can then be fastened. Corrugated nails can be used as mechanical fasteners but tack plates and chevrons are the simplest techniques for softwoods. Fasteners crumple when driven to hardwood and can cause joint or wood splits. Biscuits or open splines can be used. Wood plugs are also useful in securing joints and are easy to use. They also create a stable and strong joint.
Using a clamp for picture frames, the frames must be clamped together with glue applied to the joints. In order for the glue to dry, the frame must be clamped for 24 hours after which, the frame can be un-clampt. To reinforce the joints, a 1 inch diameter and ¼ inch deep holes must be drilled in all corners of the frame. The holes are then covered with 1 inch dowels. The plugs must be of the same material like the frame. Glue is then applied on the holes and covered with the dowel plugs. A damp and clean cloth can be used to wipe any excess glue. The glue must be left to dry for 24 hours before finishing the frame.
In making picture frames, finishing is important to make the frame look smooth and nice. The frame is sanded with traces of dust removed by a tack cloth. A fine sandpaper can be used to remove any sand or residual glue. After sanding, the picture frame can be painted, stained, or left as is.
